Carrier options after 12th science background

The Science stream is divided into two subgroups PCM and PCB. PCM is physics, chemistry, and maths (non-medical stream) whereas PCB is physics, chemistry, and biology (medical streams). There is also an option to choose both biology and maths in the science stream.

Students with a science stream can pursue both science and non-science career options. That is a boon of choosing science over arts and commerce. 12th a turning point in the life of every student, without proper guidance, many students juggle with choosing the best career option for themselves. Let’s look at the career options after 12th science PCMB other than engineering and medical.

B. Sc general vs B. Sc (Hons): it is important to understand the difference between B. Sc general and B. Sc (Hons). B. Sc general is a basic bachelor’s degree in science with no specialized knowledge of a particular subject. The syllabus is designed such that it will build a foundation of various science subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, and other life sciences.

On the contrary, B. Sc (Hons) is appraised as more valuable from the job perspective. The syllabus focuses on advanced theoretical knowledge and research skills of the corresponding subject such as physics, chemistry, maths, or biology. It avails students of a wide range of advanced academic as well as professional careers.

B. Sc Anthropology: Anthropology is a branch of science that studies humanity related to human behavior, socio-cultural evolution, linguistics concerning past and present. Students of anthropology have scope in colleges, universities, government agencies, businesses, Health, and Human Services, museums, and research institutes.

B. Sc zoology: It is an undergraduate specialist degree in zoology and research work. The admission is based on merit as well as through the entrance exam. Students of zoology have career options like researcher, lab technician, teaching, zoo keeping, nature conservation officer.

B. Sc botany:  The undergraduate course deals with a detailed study of plants and their Physiology. The job opportunities can be botanist, nature conservationist, biological technician, ecologist, environmental consultants, plant pathologist, nursery management, plant exploration, etc

B. Sc Microbiology: Microbiology is a science that studies microorganisms such as different species of unicellular or multicellular microscopic organisms, viruses, bacteria, and fungi. it also consists of several sub-faculties like virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology, etc

Students with this stream can work as a biochemist, cellular biologists, immunologists, bacteriologists, and pathology labs and research work.

B. Sc biomedical science: Students who are keen on learning human health and diseases including basics of cell and molecular biology, anatomy, Physiology can opt for this undergraduate degree.

These students have career scope in colleges, universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, laboratories, and the research industry on different job profiles.

Duration of course – 3 years

B. Sc occupational therapy: It is an undergraduate degree course that deals with the betterment of handicapped and limited people through various therapeutic measures. The procedures are the same as rehabilitation programs.

Students of this field can work as occupational therapists, consultants, cardiac and other department OT nurses or technicians, etc.

Duration of course – 3 years to 4.5 years

B. Sc nursing: Apart from other careers in medicine, nursing also allows you to serve patients through a variety of medical treatments. After completion of B Sc nursing in India, opportunities are available in many countries. Nurses also play an important role in the healthcare industry and are often in demand.

B. Pharma: Bachelor of Pharmacy is an undergraduate course in which students study the preparation of drugs and dispensing of medicine. The pharmacy council of India is the regulatory authority that forms the norms and conditions for this course. Pharmacists have deep knowledge about drugs and are in huge demand in the healthcare industry. They undertake a drug development process to cure diseases and deficiencies.

B. Sc agriculture: The branch of science deals with the study of different conditions, research, and practices of agriculture. It consists of horticulture, floriculture, soil science, genetics and breeding, plant pathology. The students can apply to various job profiles: agriculture officer, agricultural scientist, agricultural development officer, agricultural technician, business development executive, marketing executive, assistant plantation manager.

Duration of course – 4 years

Medicine: There are different branches in medicine such as BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BDS (Dental), MBBS, BPT (physiotherapy), and Veterinary science and animal husbandry BVSc.AH

If a student wants to opt for any of the above, he /she should clear the entrance exam like NEET, PU CET common entrance test, AP entrance examination, AAU VET, Common entrance test (CET), and the AIMEE as per the corresponding course.

Duration, of course, is different for each faculty ranging from 4 to 5.5 years.

B. Sc computer science: It is the basic course of computer science that helps in building the foundation of mathematical and theoretical concepts of computing. Students can be hired as software developers or testers in IT companies.

B. Sc electronics: The course focuses on thorough training of electronics and communication systems. Students of electronics have good career opportunities in research and development, design, testing, manufacturing, inspection, quality check, sales, and management, defense electronics, etc.

Engineering: Engineers with a degree from top universities are always in demand in India as well as overseas. Different streams in engineering are Mechanical, Electronics and telecommunication, computer science, information technology, civil, chemical, aeronautical, marine, instrumentation, etc.

Duration of the course - 4 years.

B. Arch- Students with good drawing skills and visualization can be good candidates for Architecture. This is an undergraduate course and students can work as site managers or can build their firm.

Duration of the course - 5 years.

B. Des: It is an undergraduate course for interior designing. Interior designers are creative people, and they are self-employed.

Duration of the course – 4 years.

BCA: The primary focus of the course is on computer applications. The undergraduate course teaches programming languages. A master’s degree in computer application can be considered equivalent to engineering. The graduates have good opportunities in the IT industry.

B. A or B. Com: Though you have selected the science stream, students keen on language can make their career in arts. Students of science can pursue commerce degrees and enter professional courses like CA, CS, or ICWA.

B. A/ B. Sc Economics: It is one of the profitable career options with vast opportunities in investment firms, NGOs, the government sector, etc.

Biochemistry: It is a distinct discipline that deals with the combination of chemistry, physiology, and biology to research the chemistry of living organisms. It evolved in the 20th century and has career options in research, analytical chemist, pharma associate, clinical biochemistry, food safety analyst, etc.

Biotechnology: Biotechnology is a science that studies biological systems and uses living organisms to develop various products such as their genetic material. A biotechnology graduate can have their role in industries as biochemists, biophysicists, or scientists.

Duration of the course – 3 years.

Business management career: Science students can make their career in business management, product management, marketing and sales, data analysis, human resources, and management consultancy.

Armed force Career: If you want to serve your nation, there are good services available in the army. After the 12th you can give the NDA entrance exam to join the army. After graduation, you can give a combined defense services exam to do a career in the armed forces.

Humanities careers: There is a myriad of options available for science students such as product designing, graphics, fashion, journalism and media, film making, animation, photography, video editing, etc.

Also, students with the PCMB group can opt for biomedical engineering, healthcare data mining, artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, smart wearable technology, etc.
